A gaggle of alums was commissioned to write one-minute plays for the first-ever Boston One-Minute Play Festival (a co-production of the NYC-based One-Minute Play Festival and BPT) including William Fancher, Peter M. Floyd, Deirdre Girard, Anna Renée Hansen, Heather Houston, Colleen Hughes, Dan Hunter, Emily Kaye Lazarro, K. Alexa Mavromatis, Matt Mayerchak, Walt McGough, Ronan Noone, Rick Park, John Shea, Donna Sorbello, and John Zakrosky, Jr. All told, the January event will feature 70 plays by alums and other favorite Boston-area playwrights. At this theatre
Ever
notice the “At This Theatre” feature included in every Broadway Playbill? Maybe
not. It’s the page or so that gives a brief history of the theatre you’re
sitting in, and of the notable productions that have played there. You might’ve
missed it (back in the day, it used to be more prominent in the program) or skipped
over it, thinking “Who reads that stuff?”
If the
latter is the case, I’ll answer that question: Me. I read that stuff. I’m that
guy. If I’m sitting inside one of those great theatres waiting for a play to
begin, you can bet that I’m a) excited about what I’m there to see and b) that
I’m loving the architecture and history of the house too. And yeah, I’m geeky enough to be super-excited when I
go to a Broadway show in a theatre I haven’t visited before…and when I am
revisiting an old “friend” (e.g., at the St. James waiting for the 2008 revival
of Gypsy to begin, remembering the concert revival of Sunday in the Park
With George at the same venue 15 years earlier). I tend to keep most of this geekery to
myself. Until now, of course.

Diamond's 'Stick Fly' Broadway-bound!

Grammy Award-winner Alicia Keys with Reuben Cannon & Nelle Nugent are proud to announce the Broadway premiere of Stick Fly, the critically-acclaimed American play by Lydia R. Diamond and directed by Kenny Leon, opening on Broadway on Thursday, December 8, 2011 at the Lyceum Theatre (149 W. 45th Street). Performances begin Friday, November 18, 2011. Tickets are now on sale through Telecharge.com.
Stick Fly follows the LeVays, an affluent African American family who come together to spend a summer weekend at their Martha’s Vineyard home. The adult sons, aspiring novelist Kent and golden boy plastic surgeon Flip, have each brought their respective ladies (one Black and one White) to meet the parents. Food, drink and Trivial Pursuit tangle with class, race and identity politics in this contemporary comedy of manners.
