What is happening here?!

If you've been watching this space (and I honestly feel bad if you have), you've probably been thinking, "Well, she usually takes a little break after the Marathon -- when everybody's feeling a little blogged-out -- but...what happened?" Or something like that.

Here's the deal: This blog, as it presently exists, is run on Blogger and has always operated separately from the BPT Web site. BPT's new(ish, now) Web site is built on the WordPress platform and soon -- very soon, we are told -- the site will include an integrated blog complete with the archive of everything you've seen here over the past (gulp) almost four years.

But it's taking some time.

Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees at last night's Elliot Norton Awards, but especially to Steven Barkhimer, whose Windowmen was awarded Outstanding New Script! Windowmen lead Alex Pollock received the Outstanding Actor award in the Small or Fringe category for his performance...and also for his stage turns in Company One's The Flick and Gloucester Stage Company's This Is Our Youth.

Third annual Boston #1MPF

Time flies -- The 3^rd Annual Boston One-Minute Play Festival will be here before we know it! More on this very soon, but in the meantime here's the official press release:

The One-Minute Play Festival (Dominic D’Andrea, Producing Artistic Director) and Boston Playwrights’ Theatre (Kate Snodgrass, Artistic Director) continue their dynamic partnership with the The 3^rd Annual Boston One-Minute Play Festival, with part of the proceeds to benefit BPT’s artist residency programming.  

The 3^rd Annual Boston One-Minute Play Festival will be presented on Saturday, Jan 4, Sunday, Jan 5, and Monday, Jan 6–all at 8 p.m. at BPT  (949 Commonwealth Ave ). Tickets are $20 and available for purchase at 866-811-4111 and bostonplaywrights.org.

The performance on Sunday Jan 5, at 8 p.m., will be livestreamed on Howlround.com’s HowlroundTV at livestream.com/newplay. 

It Came From Rhombus!

Hear scenes from some of the plays Rhombus playwrights' group has developed over the past ten years in the anniversary extravaganza It Came From Rhombus! The evening will include readings of work by past and present Rhombus members, which is a roster of BPT and BTM alums. Proceeds from the event will benefit Rhombus' creative home -- Boston Playwrights' Theatre!

It is not a joke when I say that I cannot imagine a season more exciting than this one. I've had a front row seat -- literally -- for the evolution of Ginger Lazarus' Burning at Rhombus; I remember when Steve Barkhimer wrote the first scenes of Windowmen in one of Richard's classes (me being lucky enough to be his classmate and all) years ago; and I was positively blown away by the emotion and power of Peter M. Floyd's Absence at a reading last spring.

It's inspiring to be even a small part of this, and I can't wait to see these scripts come to life. Trust me: You should be excited too!

Kate's new air conditioner

This week, BPT has played host to some of the hottest actors in our area, during callback auditions for our season of new plays. And yes, I’m talking about performers familiar to our local stages – actors in demand, some our acting royalty – but I’m also saying, literally, the talent is sweating. As I started thinking about this post in the lobby (yesterday, while I was checking in actors while callbacks for Peter M. Floyd’s Absence were taking place in the front theatre), it was 95 degrees outside and an Excessive Heat Warning had been issued. Toasty.

Announcing our 2013-14 season!

Boston Playwrights’ Theatre (BPT) announced its 32^nd season today, which will feature new work by three of its award-winning alumni playwrights. The line-up includes Burning by Ginger Lazarus, Windowmen by Steven Barkhimer, and Absence by Peter M. Floyd. All three writers are based in Boston.

“I’m honored and excited to support these particular playwrights. They are vastly different writers, but each of them is exploring that ‘threshold moment,’ the turning point that changes lives,” BPT Artistic Director Kate Snodgrass said. “These are the important moments we look for in the theatre.”
